Dreaming of You

Dreaming of You is a system for tapping into your computer's dreams.

There are three parts to this program.

  1. A screen saver that visualizes screenshots that it downloads from a web server.
  2. A program that periodically takes screenshots of your computer and uploads them to the server.
  3. A preference widget that displays information about the program and allows you to toggle private mode, which temporarily disables taking screenshots.

For almost three years I clocked in and out of sleep using a custom built software tool. This information was publicly available on my website. The homepage would either say "Richard is awake" or "Richard is asleep" and also have an archive of sleep data. I have notoriously been one to oversleep. Collecting this data was simultaneously for self-improvement as well as addressing online privacy concerns and online intimacy possibilities.

This photo essay documents an event that occurred in the Porter Bridge Gallery
at UC Santa Cruz in April 2006. For ten days, the gallery was transformed into
a creative living space. The highlight of this event was a family of five who
lived at the space for the entire duration. The Open House was a project
produced by Jamie Burkart.
